Orson's Shadow" is a play by Austin Pendleton that delves into the world of theater, exploring the complex relationships and egos of some of its most iconic figures. Set in 1960, the play imagines the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolds when Orson Welles is hired to direct Laurence Olivier in a production of Eugène Ionesco's "Rhinoceros." As the tension between Welles and Olivier escalates, the play also highlights the personal and professional struggles of Vivien Leigh and Joan Plowright, offering a poignant and often humorous look at the lives of these legendary artists. Through sharp dialogue and rich character development, "Orson's Shadow" captures the essence of an era and the timeless challenges of creative collaboration.
I had the privilege of assisting the renowned costume designer Mary Vogt—whose impressive credits include Crazy Rich Asians, Hocus Pocus, and Batman Returns—in bringing the characters of “Orson’s Shadow” to life on stage.
